Is The Coronavirus Quarantine Causing My Acne?

I am pre7y sure the Coronavirus is to blame for my current adult acne!! In all seriousness though.. Who has broken out since the Coronavirus QuaranBne? I know I have! So many clients call and tell me that they haven’t changed a thing and all of a sudden they are breaking out. Well obviously there is no direct link between Coronavirus and your sudden adult acne/breakouts but let’s take a look at what has changed since the “new normal” and discuss four triggers that might be causing your annoying breakouts.

1. STRESS

When I think of anything that is related to Covid-19 I immediately get stressed! So many of us are unsure about the future. Worrying about the health and wellness of ourselves and our loved ones. Worrying about how the shutdown will affect our jobs, the economy, and most importantly college football🏈 !! All this leads to an insurmountable amount of stress. When we are stressed our CorBsol levels begin to rise. Too much cortisol can increase oil production and also slow down the healing process. Meaning thanks to stressing you now have longer-lasting adult acne. I know right!! Thanks a lot, Corona!! 😊

2. ROUTINE

Another huge factor is routine! If you now find yourself out of your normal daily routine more than likely your skincare routine will suffer. Just because you aren’t going into work with a full face of makeup doesn’t mean you should start skipping your twice-daily cleansing, toning, and moisturizing routine. Maybe you are homeschooling your 1st grader and have lost the will to live, or worry about what you look like anymore!! Same boat Sista!! Lol!! No ma7er the reason sBcking to your routine in this totally out of the ordinary situation is crucial for your skin.

3. DIET

DrasBc change in diet can definitely impact your skin. When we are home and stressed we have a tendency to eat more sugar and dairy. Maybe do to arguing around the clock with smaller less exhausted versions of yourself (aka your children) has led to the very necessary bo7le of wine a day! 😉 No

Judgment here!!Don’tdoit!!Ismyconstantmantraonthewaytomyfridge!!😊 The problem is, all of these foods increase inflammation in the body. A study published in October 2019 in the Journal of Academy of NutriBon and DieteBcs showed; people who ate low inflammatory foods are more likely to have No to Very Mild Acne. Those who ate high inflammatory foods are more likely to have Moderate

or Severe Acne. So really trying to maintain that healthy eating and living does pay off. If you figure out how to do it while being trapped in your home with all the things, then please email me your secret!!

4. LACK OF PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

A lot of us either out of fear or state-mandated shutdowns are finding it impossible to receive professional services. A professional exfoliation procedure can really help alleviate mild acne. Common professional services used to help treat mild acne or breakouts are; microdermabrasion, chemical peels, facials, and extractions. Of course, if you have more severe or cystic acne you want to consult a dermatologist.

WHAT ARE SIX MAIN THINGS YOU NEED IN YOUR HOME ACNE ARSENAL

CLEANSER TONER MOISTURIZER

So you now you are meditating, eating right, and yet you need some real tools at home to help you with your current breakout situation. There are many things we can do at home to stop and prevent breakouts. However, we have to be diligent to reach our desired results, especially for people prone to breakouts. Make sure you are cleansing, toning, and moisturizing twice daily. Yes!! Even if you are acne-prone, moisturizing is very important!! You need a light non-oil based moisturizer that will replenish lost hydration without clogging your skin. Let me explain: If you do not use a moisturizer to help with lost hydration your skin will start to produce more oil, creating clogged pores that lead to acne. Here are some of my favorite Cleansers, Toners, and Moisturizers for my acne-prone clients:

EXFOLIATOR

You have to exfoliate!!! ExfoliaBng is the removal of dead skin cells. If you do not remove the dead cells they create a barrier blocking your oil excretion. This entrapment of oil under the dead skin results in comedones (your zits!!). Your exfoliation frequency should be based on your skin type and type of exfoliation (chemical or Physical). My Favorite exfoliator for many reasons is Dr. Dennis Gross Peel Pads. They come in SensiBve (mild strength), Universal (medium Strength), and Extra Strength (Exactly what it says extra strength!!). These are made to be daily peels. However, ExfoliaBon depends on your skin and you don’t want to over-exfoliate. Make sure to discontinue if you become red or overly sensitive. If you are new to the Dr. Dennis Gross Peels, start by making sure you are lightly exfoliating weekly then slowly transition into bi-weekly. If you are not experiencing any issues you can eventually gradually increase your usage until you are using them daily. This is my absolute favorite exfoliator and the best part is: acids help dry up unwanted breakouts!! This Peel Pad Does Not Disappoint!!

Dr. Dennis Gross’s iconic original formula, a daily (or weekly) peel formulated to treat multiple common skin issues: uneven tone and texture, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, and acne with five acids – without causing irritation.

SPOT TREATMENT

You want to make sure you have a good spot treatment for when the pesky li7le breakouts happen. With breakouts, its important to trust the process don’t pick at it! Be patient and let the spot treatment work its magic. You want to avoid scarring and creating dark spots from damaging the skin around the breakout. I know we are all guilty of messing with our breakouts and we always end up with a far worse problem than if we had lep them alone. So take a deep breath, leave it alone, walk away from the mirror, and spot treats it!! Here is my favorite spot treatment:

Dermalogica Age Bright Spot Fader - NEW

SUNSCREEN

Make sure to wear sunscreen!! You need sunscreen even if you are staying indoors. Since a lot of us are wearing less makeup than we previously did, I suggest a really great non-comedogenic (will not clog your pores) Bnted moisturizer. It will give you that beautiful no makeup/makeup look we all want! Helping smooth out dark spots and covering imperfections while giving you the sun protection you need. Here are some of my favorite Bnted sunscreens:

Revision Intellishade MATTE SPF 45 Tinted Moisturizer

Elta MD UV Daily SPF 40 TINTED

Nothing is simplistic when it comes to breakouts or the coronavirus!! I hope these Bps help you stay feeling beautiful!! Also, Make sure you keep a very consistent routine for 30 days before making any additional changes to your skincare. This 30 day trial is important in order to test the efficacy of the products on your specific skin type.
