Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium (CMC) 1.0% is the active lubricant — at this concentration, CMC forms a viscous, gel-like film over the ocular surface that adheres longer than standard drops, providing sustained relief between applications. The higher the CMC concentration, the more prolonged the contact time and the more intensive the lubrication — CMC 1% (as in Celluvisc) provides significantly longer-lasting relief than the 0.5% CMC used in standard Refresh Optive. The preservative-free, single-use vial format eliminates the risk of preservative-induced surface toxicity (particularly benzalkonium chloride/BAK damage), which worsens dry eye with repeated use in multi-dose bottles. Each vial is sterile, used once, and discarded — ensuring sterility at every application.
